Free or cheap Valentine’s Day events

You don’t have to be rich to treat your sweetheart to something special on Valentine’s Day. There’s enough free or cheap stuff going on in Santa Fe that anyone can create a memorable holiday on a tight budget.

To be really romantic, start the day before:

  • FREE: Find Your Lucky Stars Sweetheart Star Party. Friday, February 13, 7:30pm – 9:00pm, Hyde Memorial State Park Lodge. From Fort Marcy Park, take NM 475 (Hyde Park Road) east for 8.5 miles. Why is this the perfect Valentine’s Day event? Because Peter Lipscomb and his 20″ telescope will on hand. Hey, I’m just quoting the event listing, OK?
  • CHEAP: Hear hot folk rock artist Joshua Radin in concert. His genre-busting music has rocketed him up the iTunes catalog, and he even sang at the wedding of Ellen deGeneres and Portia di Rossi. YOU can hear him for just $12 if you buy tickets in advance. He’s performing at 7:30pm at Santa Fe Brewing Company, 27 Fireplace.

And on Valentine’s Day itself:

  • CHEAP: I love old movies. And I regret never having seen any of them on a big screen, in a theatre, as God intended. So I’m excited that The Lensic is showing An American in Paris on Valentine’s Day for just $5! Shut up!! We’re talking Gene Kelly. George Gershwin. Six Academy Awards! 7:00pm, 211 W. San Francisco St.
  • FREE: What’s a romantic evening without dancing? The Santa Fe Community Orchestra with special guests The Santa Fe Great Big Jazz Band and Elevation Vocal Jazz present “Let’s Dance! It does a Heart Good” from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at the Santa Fe Convention Center, 201 W. Marcy St. This fantastic event features a silent auction, cash bar and food from Cowgirl BBQ available for purchase! All ages, FREE admission, suggested donation $10. All proceeds benefit SFCO.
  • FREE: Love poetry. If that doesn’t get her in the mood, what will? Featured readers Richard Vargas, Alaina R. Alexander, and Jessica Lopez will perform at “A Night of Open Mic Love,” 7:00pm to 10:00pm at the Santa Fe Complex, 624 Agua Fria St. Open mic sign-up from 6:30-6:55pm. Free admission, complimentary refreshments. What’s not to love?
