Pueblo Independence Day: Jemez State Monument

Pueblo Independence Day on Sunday August 14 2011 at Jemez State Monument is free for all New Mexico residents. Commemorations include Native American dances, music, crafts and food. The day starts at 7 am with a 13-mile run from Jemez Pueblo to Gisewa Pueblo kiva at Jemez State Monument. Anyone can join the run, or just watch. Guest speakers are at 10 am, and celebrations continue from 10:30 am with traditional Jemez Pueblo dances, flute music, and Native American arts and crafts and food. Admission is free to Pueblo Independence Day events.

The usual admission is $3 to visit Jemez State Monument, and it’s free for kids aged 16 and under. New Mexico residents enjoy free admission on Sundays, and New Mexico seniors on Wednesdays too, with ID. Jemez State Monument is about 71 miles and 90 minutes’ drive west of Santa Fe, via either Los Alamos, or I-25 south to exit 242 from Bernalillo. Get directions to Jemez State Monument.
